Some fifty people packed the hall which was the venue for the second talk for coeliac sufferers at the Ter building in Manlleu (headquarters of Fundició Dúctil Benito). Among them was the president of the Catalan coeliac association, Matilde Torralba.
The talk, entitled “Do we know how to read food labels?” was given by Marta Gómez, a nutritionist and food technologist, who spoke about food regulations and everything to do with gluten, an element which coeliac sufferers have to avoid in their diet throughout their lives.
She devoted much of her talk to discussing a new European regulation (number 41/2009) put forward by the Spanish health and consumer minister, which is already in force but so far on a voluntary basis, which will mean that there are a wider variety of products suitable for coeliac sufferers. This regulation will increase supply and lead to reductions in price. Products will have to specify whether they are gluten-free (up to a maximum of 20mg per kilo) or have a low gluten content (>100 mg/kg).
Another of the issues she dealt with was that all products should carry a symbol saying whether they are suitable for coeliac sufferers or not, to that they can purchase them safety without having to read through all the ingredients.
The Catalan coeliac sufferers' association, together with the Autonomous Government's Catalan Consumer Agency, encourages the use of a single symbol for all the food producers and distributors in
At the end of the talk, the specialist establishments Forn Ricardera of Folgueroles and Bon Paladar of Manlleu offered the chance to taste some gluten-free products.
