Paris City Council Installs 56 Leman Benches in New Green Area of Parc Paysage de la Cour du Maroc
The new public park is located in the Cour du Maroc area (rue Aubervilliers, Paris 18e), not far from the Gare de l’Est. It is one of the key projects Paris City Council has overseen in response to the need for green areas and to improve the landscape of a number of the city’s more socially disadvantaged outlying districts.
The work was carried out between 2005 and 2007 and covers 42,500 square metres of playgrounds, gardens and sports areas. The team of architects, landscape designers and sociologists awarded the work was led by the well-known landscape architect Michel Corajoud (winner of the National Urban Development Award in France, 2003). Other renowned professionals involved include the architect Georges Descombes, the landscape designer Claire Corajoud and the sociologists Isaac Joseph and Stéphane Tonnelat.
As Michel Corajoud explains on the Paris City Council website: “The project, adapted to the site and to the urban context, offers a broad linear concept that is visually easy to grasp. The park has been done up in a way that emphasises and magnifies the place in order to engrave it in its history. The land has an elongated shape, averaging 460m long by 90m wide. The different areas and facilities have been organised in a system of successive long strips and strata in line with the original site.”
Benito’s Leman bench, designed by Carlos López and Julien Descombes (2004), was selected for instalment right across the park. 56 benches have been positioned so far. The design is perfectly in keeping with the project because it follows environmental and social criteria. The feet are made from the secondary smelting of aluminium (recycled and recyclable material) and the 14 planks used on the seat are Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified tropical wood from controlled felling. The Leman is a very comfortable, stylish bench thanks to its quality finishes and generous length (2.3 metres long).
