Surge protector device FULL PROTECTOR

APS4

Description

Benito-Novatilu’s <APS4 surge protector device, under Patent ES 1 287 364 U, increases the reliability and average life of luminaires with LED technology. The <APS4 is designed to protect the luminaire from all possible external agents (Transient Overvoltage and Permanent Overvoltage and Undervoltage). The devices that make up a luminaire (LED modules, drivers, communication and control nodes, etc.) are electronic equipment that could suffer serious damage in the medium and short term due to overvoltage, significatively reducing their useful life.

Why instal Benito-Novatilu’s <APS2 Surge Protector Device?
- Street lighting installations are more exposed to atmospheric discharges.
- A large part of street lighting panels lack transient overvoltage protection.
- In very long lighting lines, the protection of the panels can become totally inefficient.
- The protection included in the drivers is insufficient to ensure the effectiveness against usual overvoltage peaks in street lighting lines.
- Voltage variations of the electrical grid above or under the admissible voltage range are the most frequent cause of street lighting failure. In the same way as overvoltage, undervoltage can also destroy the drivers of the luminaires.

Protection on two levels:
Transient Overvoltage and Permanent Overvoltage and Undervoltage.

Transient Overvoltage:
They are produced by the induction of atmospheric discharges in power lines, but the ones produced by switching manoeuvres in the grid, engine start-up, etc. can also have damaging effects.
The <APS4 has an overvoltage peak capacity of up to 20 kA.

Permanent Overvoltage and Undervoltage:
Voltage variations of the electrical grid above or under the admissible voltage range are the most frequent cause of street lighting failure. A fault in the neutral can cause oscillations between the phases, reuslting in permanent overvoltage and undervoltage. In the same way as overvoltage, undervoltage are also damaging to the survival of drivers.
Even though it has 4 different operational windows, the <APS4 is supplied preset to protect from overvoltage exceeding 264 Vac and below 170 Vac, thus protecting most drivers on the market.

How does Benito-Novatilu’s <APS4 Surge Protector Device work?
Benito-Novatilu’s <APS4 Surge Protector Device is connected in series, as shown in the attached diagram.
The device absorbs the line’s overvoltage peaks between phase, neutral and earth, diverting them mainly to earth.
In the event of permanent overvoltage fluctuations, the >APS4 Full Protector detects those that are above or below the operational window, preventing them from reaching the luminaire. When voltage returns to the safe zone within the window, the Full Protector powers the luminaire again. Thus, it protects the internal components from damaging voltage, either due to excess or lack.
The purpose of the <APS4 Surge Protector Device is to protect the luminaire. When it reaches the end of its life, it disconnects the luminaire, thus preventing it from being left unprotected at any time.
The switched-off luminaire is easily detected by maintenance services. Replacing the Surge Protector Device is almost as easy as replacing a fuse.

Applicable regulation:
Benito-Novatilu’s <APS4 Surge Protector Device is of TYPE 2 (20 kA) and is manufactured according to the EN 61643-11 standard.
