Description

Corten steel is a type of steel whose chemical composition causes its oxidation to have specific characteristics that protect the part against atmospheric corrosion.

The degree of exposure greatly influences the process of formation of the protective layer. If it is exposed directly to rain, sun and wind, the rust layer will form faster than if it is protected. In the latter case, rust tends to be rougher, less dense and less uniform.

Frequent changes in humidity and drying promote the acceleration of the weather resistance process. Atmospheric pollution also plays a part, which explains why, in industrial environments, rust gets a darker colour. In rural atmospheres, the process is slower and rust gets a lighter colour.

The oxidation of Corten steel evolves over time and rust forms, quickly or slowly, depending on the ambient temperature and moisture.
